Art in the Garden

I think that one of the ways to add more interest to our garden, without lots of digging, is to install some garden art. When I visited the Kaipara Sculpture Gardens recently, I found some lovely examples, all beyond our budget! So I'll be looking out for ways of re-creating some of the pieces using found, junk and natural objects.

I'll be hunting down an old teapot and bowl to make a birdbath like the one above...

And some piles of stones or wood could look almost as good as the cairn above...

The wire and bead creations above look like they'd be fun to make. And the nest below was made from a hanging basket with twigs and concrete eggs in it - very easy...

This is what I've managed so far... A wreath ($1 from the hospice shop) with feathers from the moulting peacocks. I thought it was pretty good for a first attempt and I have great plans for future garlands - using rosemary for one and the heads of giant sedge for another. Watch this space!

Tealights at teatime

I'll be looking out for sieves and steamers in op shops from now on with a view to recreating this amazing chandelier that I saw at NZ Sculpture on Shore...

The final piece...

Leaving aside the decks, the only piece of the renovations jigsaw that remains is the bannister. Who would have thought that a bannister could be so tricky or so expensive?

We think we've finally decided now - a stainless steel and rimu bannister. Let's hope it's built before we have a crawler in residence.

Weather Forecast 1

Windmills on Brick Bay Sculpture Trail

After a stunning Easter weekend, the weather has turned a bit more autumnal. Warm still but wetter and windier.

Potager Garden

A visit to a local garden gave me a few ideas about how to brighten up our raised beds when we plant them up.

How about a huge metal cabbage, for example?

And a potting shed like this one is a must...

The Natural Look

There were lots of natural objects at the sculpture gardens too - all sorts of interesting things I could do with a woodpile...

Sculpture School

Those of you who recall our trip to the Trash Palace in Porirua earlier this year will know that I'm keen to create some sculptures from "found objects" to display around our block. James, on the other hand, is very keen that I don't turn our beautifully manicured land into a junk yard.

My recent trip to the Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens gave me a few new ideas...

I've now got the perfect excuse to hoard bits of piping and plumbing from our renovations, plastic bags and bits of tat.

Steel Magnolias

Straight after the quilt show, I headed over to a gallery to see their latest exhibition - a great range of metal sculptures in the garden. I just need to work out where to put them now...
